CONSENT FORM

Usability Testing

PURPOSE AND BENEFITS

The students in HCDE 517, Usability Testing, are conducting several pilot usability tests. These tests provide their designers with experience in test design. The data also helps to clarify users' needs and issues and may lead to improved design.

PROCEDURES

As a participant in a study in HCDE 517, you will be asked to do one or more of the following: do a set of tasks; think out loud while doing these tasks or while filling out a questionnaire; fill out an opinion questionnaire; and/or take part in an interview. Performance data like number of errors or time to complete a task may be collected; also, opinion data may be collected. Your performance may be videotaped.

RISK, STRESS, OR DISCOMFORT

This study will not expose you to risk, stress, or discomfort beyond that normally encountered in using a computer, being videotaped, or taking a test.

OTHER INFORMATION

Once the results of these studies have been tabulated, the names of individual participants will be destroyed in order to ensure confidentiality. No one other than the investigators named above will be informed of or have access to data on the performance of individuals. Data will be retained by the investigators for no more than one quarter following the quarter in which the study is administered. You are free to refuse to participate in the study and may withdraw at any time without penalty.

I am currently a graduate student at the University of Washington, and I am looking for participants for a usability study that would help improve a free open source software. Tasks

Last week you made a resolution to get your finances organized and just began to try a free software called “KMyMoney”. It’s 3:00 in the afternoon of a Sunday. You picked up your mail and sat down to do some of your pending paper work and manage your finances for the week.  

You have learnt from the marketing material that KMyMoney:

1.       Strives to be easy to use,

2.       Provides all important features commercial systems provide and

3.       Uses double entry accounting principles to ensure accounts are kept in correct order.

Last week you have set up KMyMoney to suit your requirements. The following is the description of the settings you applied:

-          Created your KMyMoney file

-          Added accounts with starting balances

-          Entered few expenses

-          Choose basic categories to track expenses

So, as you come back today you have few tasks lined that you want to do in KMyMoney that are as follows:

Task 1

“You have paid your monthly apartment rent today by check, now please create a reminder to enter it every month, and enter this month’s rent payment and verify to see it is entered in the system.”

Use the following data:

1.       Rent = $800

2.       Paid from your checking account BoA1

3.       Check was written to Woodland Apartments.

Task 2

“You got your cash back for a new laptop you bought recently from Staples. You have deposited that cheque yesterday, entered it into the system. Earlier today you found from your online bank statement that the cheque you deposited got cleared. Please change the entry appropriately.”
